Empowering and fostering social, professional, cultural and civic skills through pedagogical use of Wiki technologies and methodologies.

This workpackage (Creating, editing and adapting the training contents) aims at studying training strategies that combine traditional forms of learning with e-learning content (blended learning models) and to identify what type of e-learning content is the most adequate to support such strategies for the training targets. Then, it will identify which training content should be facilitated to each target public (the training curriculum), develop/collect the necessary content in a digital format, and describe/publish it in the web platform.

As part of the WikiSkills project, we proposed this handbook, published under a free licence (cc by sa 3.0).

This handbook tries to be a practical guide to help educators at all levels and sectors in using wikis in their teaching contexts.

It can interest you if…

… you are a teacher or educator at a school, university or professional / adult training institution

… you are considering using wikis as a learning resources with / for your students

… you want to increase creativity in your classroom

… you are interested in creating a wiki, but you think an initial push would help you.

The handbook is structured in four chapters.

Chapter 1 introduces themain concepts around wiki culture, and describes its application to learning contexts. It is especially useful for readers who are taking the first steps with wikis.

Chapter 2 provides practical advices on how to use wikis for educational purposes. First, it outlines advantages, challenges and solutions related to the use of wikis in teaching contexts. Afterwards, it hints good practices of using wikis in teaching settings. The chapter also lists success factors for the relevant use of wiki environments in educational settings.

Chapter 3 addresses the WikiSkills training approach. It describes the methodology through which the project aims to teach educators about wiki culture, and specifies the modalities and the tools used in this context.

Chapter 4 providesa toolkit of useful resources, i.e. links to videos and readings of interest, which were carefully gathered by the consortium for readers aiming to get a deeper understanding of the use of wikis in education.

In this perspective, Deliverable 2.1 – European state of the art report – aims at describing the situation in Europe regarding Wiki tools uses within the 4 LLP target groups.

About TEDx Geneva

The WikiSkills team is delighted to announce TEDxGeneva, a TEDx event dedicated to Wiki Culture in Geneva.

More information will come soon, but please save the date : Geneva, April 17th !

About TEDx, x= independently organized event
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TED has created a program called TEDx. TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. Our event is called TEDx Geneva, where x = independently organized TED event. At our TEDx Geneva event, TEDTalks video and live speakers will combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events, including ours, are self-organized.

About TED

TED is a non-profit organization devoted to Ideas Worth Spreading. Started as a four-day conference in California 25 years ago, TED has grown to support those world-changing ideas with multiple initiatives. The annual TED Conference invites the world’s leading thinkers and doers to speak for 18 minutes. Their talks are then made available, free, at TED.com. TED speakers have included Bill Gates, Al Gore, Jane Goodall, Elizabeth Gilbert, Sir Richard Branson, Nandan Nilekani,Philippe Starck, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Isabel Allende and UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown. The annual TED Conference takes place in Long Beach, California, with simulcast in Palm Springs; TEDGlobal is held each year in Oxford, UK. TED’s media initiatives include TED.com, where new TEDTalks are posted daily, and the Open Translation Project, which provides subtitles and interactive transcripts as well as the ability for any TEDTalk to be translated by volunteers worldwide. TED has established the annual TED Prize, where exceptional individuals with a wish to change the world are given the opportunity to put their wishes into action; TEDx, which offers individuals or groups a way to host local, self-organized events around the world, and the TEDFellows program, helping world-changing innovators from around the globe to become part of the TED community and, with its help, amplify the impact of their remarkable projects and activities.

If you are using wiki for your audience as educational practitioner or trainer on collaborative webtools, then you are a wiki pioneer, and this project WikiSkillsmight interest you…

We propose you to participate to a study and receive the results.

The survey has 19 questions, it takes 10 to 20 minutes to fulfill.
You can then take part in the European training programme WikiSkills.

The aim of this survey is to collect the point of view of pioneers from different educational sectors using wiki tools in their teaching contexts. The survey is addressing school teachers, university professors, professional and adults trainers in order to find out how they are using wikis today, how they are developing wiki skills of their students/learners as well as identifying interests and needs associated to wikis and teaching wiki skills.

Thanks for taking 10 minutes of your time to help us help you in your mission of teaching how to use wikis to your public.

If you would like to, you will receive the results of this survey in the second trimester of 2012, and be invited into an open working group of European wiki teachers & trainers.
